Categories Why would I want to cruise to Alaska?

That is a valid question; that is, if you have never gone to Alaska. Most people confronted with taking a cruise to Alaska immediately think " Spend 10 days freezing to death?" " What is there to do in Alaska- go on a sleigh ride?" " If I want to see penguins and seals I can go to the zoo". Again these would be valid statements if you have never been to the " Great Land" which is Alaska. But the reality is that once you have travelled to Alaska, you will never forget it. The beauty and majesty of this land will conquer even the most indifferent and reluctant heart.

The adjectives that describe this region are, well, numerous: vast, majestic, wild, rugged, awesome. The diversity of places , nature and scenery are also plentiful: from majestic glaciers to awe inspiring fjords; from amazing grizzlies to gracious caribou; from impressive mountains to relaxing valleys. So it is not so much a question of "Should I go to Alaska?" but "When shall I go to Alaska?".

Cruising to the Great Land can be done during the late Spring / Summer period, from mid May to late September. There are so many choices and options to select a cruise from, that you would be better off using a travel agent/advisor. There are at least 8-10 cruise lines that offer sailings to Alaska. Even after you decide which line to use, you still have to decide: Do I want to go on a "cruise only" trip, or do I want to do a cruise and land package? Do I want to do the land portion before or after the cruise? Do I want to go to Denali National Park tours or to the Yukon land tours in Canada? Maybe I'll just do a round trip from Vancouver. The choices go on and on and they are all great options.

So once you have decided to take that cruise to Alaska you must decide on a few things: When do I want to travel? Who will be traveling with me? What is my budget? What type of trip do I prefer? Do I want to go on a fun/party kind of cruise or a more relaxing and romantic one or a luxury style cruise? Once you have answered these questions, go ahead and call your travel advisor so that they will find you the ideal trip based on your specific needs.

As you prepare for your cruise, these are some tips that will be of help to you:

1) Because the weather can be unpredictable and you will be traveling in both warm and cold areas during your trip, it is recommended that you take light clothing and clothes that will protect you from the cold. You should dress up in "layers" with the light clothing inside and the heavier clothing on the outside. This will allow you to take off or add clothes as the weather requires of you. And remember to take a good pair of hiking shoes.

2) Take a good camera. The scenery is so varied and beautiful that you must take advantage of this trip to take as many photos and videos that you can. You will cherish them and enjoy them for a long time.

3) Ask your travel advisor for recommended shore trips during your cruise. There are many options, from flying on a small plane or a helicopter " flightseeing" to canoeing and river rafting to fishing and so much more. It is better to book these shore trips before your depart on your trip so that you can take any additional clothing or items that you may need.

When you return from a vacation to these places, your question will change from " Why would I want to cruise to Alaska?" to " When will I come back to Alaska and its beauty?".
